TCYC Racing has been Cancelled Indefinitely
The Executive at TCYC was keen on trying to get some type of organized racing in English Bay this summer. At the same time, we were aware that, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the health and safety of all participants is the top priority, and that any club activities would need to be in alignment with provincial health recommendations.
After much discussion, including reviewing the requirements of BC’s Return to Sport Guidelines (www.viaSport.ca) and BC Sailing’s Covid-19 Keelboat Sailing Best Practices (www.bcsailing.bc.ca), it became clear that, given the ongoing state of emergency in BC, and the risks associated with the pandemic, it is too soon to embark on organizing keelboat racing.
The current phase (Phase 3) of the province’s Covid Restart plan involves a staggered approach to re-opening businesses, facilities and recreational activities. According to the Return to Sport Guidelines, during Phase 3, sport activities need to continue to adhere to the “Transition Measures” stage of the Sport Activity Chart – namely “in club play or modified games may slowly be introduced”.
Consequently, and sadly, our marquee event, the English Bay Scramble, has been cancelled for 2020.
We hope to be able to bring the Scramble back next year, along with other aspects of our racing schedule; however, we need to await the province moving to Phase 4 (yet to be determined) and any associated guidelines/restrictions.
We thank our members and prospective racers for their support and understanding of our decision in light of the unprecedented circumstances of the pandemic.
We wish you well in any sailing activities that you may undertake within your bubble(s) this summer. Stay safe!
